Quick verdict

n8n is the strongest fit here for long workflows, custom code and self-hosting, because it bills one execution per run however many steps it has. On our five standard workloads it needed only the Starter or Pro plan. The trade-off is setup effort and no free cloud plan. Based on official documentation and pricing as of October 20, 2026. No product was tested hands-on for this page.

Prices are in EUR as n8n publishes them for visitors in Germany; we never convert currencies. Taxes are not included unless the vendor says so.

Best for

Technical teams with long or code-heavy workflows, and anyone who must self-host.

Pricing

Cloud Starter €20/mo billed annually (2,500 workflow executions with unlimited steps), Pro €50/mo billed annually (10,000 workflow executions with unlimited steps). Business €667/mo billed annually, self-hosted. Enterprise: contact sales. Community Edition: free to self-host. Prices in euros.

Why we picked it

One of the three platforms in the Price Index cost engine, and the main per-run-billing and self-hosting option.

Strengths

  • Billed per workflow run with unlimited steps, so a 12-step run costs the same execution as a 2-step one.
  • Manual test runs and sub-workflow runs do not count toward the quota; only the parent execution counts.
  • Starter covered 4 of our five standard workloads.
  • Code node for custom JavaScript or Python, plus genuine self-hosted editions.

Weaknesses

  • No free cloud plan. The free Community Edition is self-hosted and excludes SSO, workflow sharing and Git version control.
  • Self-hosting moves updates, backups and monitoring onto your team.
  • Cloud plans cap concurrent executions, which matters when many triggers fire at once.
  • The Business plan is self-hosted only; n8n Cloud hosting for Business is waitlisted.

Who it's for

Teams comfortable with JSON and APIs whose workflows have many steps, or who need code or self-hosting.

Who should skip it

Non-technical teams who want a free hosted start: Make's free plan is the easier first step.

Best alternative

  • Make

See the full alternative for readers this product isn't the right fit for.

Biggest limitation

Entry cost and effort: there is no free hosted plan, and the free Community Edition needs someone to run a server and lacks SSO, sharing and Git version control.

Is it worth it

Best value when runs are long: the execution count stays flat as steps grow. For a few short workflows, Make's free plan or Core costs less to start.

Alternatives

  • Make

Hosted with a free plan; cheaper to start for short, low-volume workflows.

  • Zapier

Hosted, task-billed; a common choice when nobody on the team writes code.
